Margaret, Ive NEVER seen any thread take several days - if they take that long they would be on page 30 or something and no one will see them to answer them.

Most queries have a response within minutes or certainly hours if they are difficult or specialist.

As Kath said if you post a thread, new ones will go to the top of the page and yours will move downwards, whether its got replies or not. If someone adds a reply to a thread it will go to the top of the page again - which is why we add nudges.

This used to flummox me too! I would post a message, watch with baited breath and then others were appearing at the top with loads of answers. I didn't know how they did that! Now I know the power of ye olde nudge!

Margaret,

A thread moves down the page every time another one gets a reply and is bumped back up to the top of the first page.

If you look at the time of any thread and then look at the time of the first reply you will see that in most cases a thread IS answered within minutes. This thread was answered at first within 4 minutes. However if a thread doesn't get a reply it just keeps moving down the first page of the boards and eventually onto the second page. This is when I would recommend a poster to nudge or bump their thread back to the top of the first page.

Hi Sally

I hope my recent postings over the weekend haven't upset you, I seem to have upset a lot of people, and it wasn't my intention. In fact, I hope you have missed them all!

Nudging your own thread is fine if you feel you haven't had sufficient replies. Nudging other people's threads is a bit of a nuisance to me (but let's not go into that again!).

I am amazed at Kathleen saying that replies usually come in within 15 minutes cos my experience is they take several days. There are some "regulars" on here at all times of day and night, but not everyone is in that category.

Kathleen, have I missed something (I think I must have) but if your thread goes to page 2 surely you must have had replies to it? I think after my shirty weekend (my doing) I am doing this wrong, so hope you can advise. Why would a thread go to page 2 if there are no replies?

Oops. Displaying my ignorance again folks.

Most threads on Genes get a reply within about 15 minutes. I would say if you haven't got an answer by the time your thread drops onto page 2 it is fine to nudge it back to the top of page one, but instead of just saying "nudge" it is best to say why....something like "nudging in case anyone coming onto the boards more recently can help".

A lot of people ask a question and then don't seem to come back to their thread to see if there are any answers, and sometimes people trying to help need to ask for more information, so always try to come back to your thread after 10 to 15 minutes.

Sally, there is no time limit to a thread. Feel free to nudge at any time. If you start a new thread, any replies on the old thread will probably be repeated which makes people slightly annoyed, so if you start a new thread on the same subject, mention what you know and what you need.

Can anyone tell me this nudge thing !!! how long after you post a new thread can you nudge, or after a while is it best to delete and start a new one? I am so grateful to you all who help at GR, and i don't want to annoy you !!!!! Any help on this would be brill.
Many thanks
