Wow, Doris was a bit naughty. Im amazed the american put his name on the cert.

There is a site for children of american servicemen born to English women in WW2 - google for it.
This may be useful: (always google for everything!)

And you wouldnt necessarily need his service number - just all the details he would have presented on his signing up. You dont "find" them you have to apply for them from the Army.

PS, Its Saxmundham - just in case you need to google or search for it.

Was his wife from Suffolk? May be he wasnt based in Suffolk but went there for the marriage.

The RAF had their own gunners - but I guess its possible they were short of men and the RA was drafted in.

If you or a member of your family are his surving next of kin you can apply for his record for about £30.

It seems there was an air base nearby......found this using google....extract from a memoir..

The next stop was Saxmundham, England near my air base at Leiston. I spent the next 14 months with the 357th Fighter Group, a P-51 Mustang fighter group that flew fighter escort for the B-17s and B-24s that were flying long-range bomber missions over Nazi Germany....

Reckon there were gunners defending the base...

Try the National Archives site for his medal cared....What was his name?

Do you think he received medals during the war? You might find something on the National Archives site.

Hi all
i have just come across my granfathers marriage cert which states
he was a gunner in the RA H.M forces the date of marriage is 1942 in Saxmundham Suffolk i have photo and he is uniform there is no serial number for him which i thought strange. He was born in battersea london now where would he of enlisted and why would he have been in Suffolk as i can not find any trace of the RA being base there , he has long gone now but i do recall him saying that he was with the 8th army in North Africa.
as i can not go any further without his serial number, any info or ideas would be most grateful
