Does anyone know if it is possible to view divorce records/papers from around 1917 and what information they would hold? Just found out my partner's great grandmother was a divorcee on her second marriage and this is the first one I've ever come across so not certain what to do now!

Many thanks for any advice you might be able to provide.

Hi Helen,

I have just received my grandmothers divorce papers
dated 1921.
You have to supply the Name of both parties, the year of the marriage and the Vol.No. and Page No. which is given on the Marriage Index. It costs 25 pounds. they will then search the Central Index of Decrees Absolute.

You apply to
Her Majesty´s Courts Service,
Decree Absolute Searches,
Room 2.03,
First Avenue House,
42-49 High Holborn,
London WC 1V 6NP

Hope this helps,
Pauline

Hi

For divorces between 1858 and 1927 nearly all the paperwork has survived and its stored at the national archives. You can search online at the National archives website in the J77 range, its indexed by name. If you do find what you are looking for at the NA then you can order and pay online and copies of the paperwork will sent in the post to you.

To search the national archives go to

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

click on tab called search the archives, click on catalogue. Click on search the catalogue, in the dept series code box type J77 and put the surname you are looking for in the word or phrase box. Use the date range to narrow down your results.

If you apply via the Court service in Holborn then you will only receive the decree absolute and maybe the NISI, these papers contain no real information and as from October last year a ten year search went up to £40!!
