Irish Marriages - this might help

In our local library I noticed a booklet entitled "Irregular Marriages in Portpatrick". Apparently "Irregular" meant marriages of people who weren't resident in the Parish.

Portpatrick used to be one of the ports of entry into Scotland for Irish immigrants and apparently quite a few married there.

If you are looking for an elusive marriage of Irish ancestors it might be worth searching the Portpatrick records on the IGI - use Hugh Wallis site to find them. Portpatrick is in Wigtownshire.

If you find anything of interest and want it looking up in the booklet to see if there is anymore info, I will gladly do so but I can't offer to do searches.

Hi Heather

Apparently Portpatrick was the "Gretna Green" for Northern Ireland. I think some of those who married there then went on to England.
