Susan
Can you put the details on here so others can look for you?

Quite often illegitmate children were given their father's surname as a middle name. I have one whose descendants also have that surname given to them - so it was obviously an important/respected name/person to be carrid on like that.

Sometimes they are given a middle name surname and you need to go back 2-3 generations to discover why that name should suddenly appear.

Susan,

Most double-barrel names are a modern invention. You'll probably find the relatives under one of the two surnames.

I have DB names in my family and none of them have hyphens.

My names were all carrying the motherĀ“s maiden name as well as the fathers. You will probably have to research both the names individually.

Sometimes when a mother remarried the child of the first marriage kept their fatherĀ“s surname but added on the name of the step father as well.

I have one rellie who was illegitimate and took the name of her mother, she was brought up by an aunt and took her name, then she took the name of her real father, then she got married and had another surname. What a tangle!

On her gravestone all four surnames are on it!!

Play around with the name until you get some results...........and don't forget to select the 'soundex' option..........

I have such a surname in my mothers family and although I think I know where the family orignated from I can find no official trace of them.
How do you search these surnames particularly as I am not absolutely certain how the second is spelt. Do you put in the hyphen or leave a gap.
Can anyone help me please.
