The birth certificate may reveal all. She may have been related to the family who adopted her.

Once you have her birth you will know who her parents were. Then you could look for their deaths in the BMDs.

Hi Sarah,

Formal adoption records started in 1927 so this is too early.

Does anyone know if any records of adoption existed in the late 19th century?

I'm working n my husband's family tree and the moment, and I have found his Great Grandparents were Enoch Pascall and Alice Maud Winnard. I have traced the Pascalls but Alice is proving tricky.

I have a matching birth record for her as Alice Maud Winnard born 1896 in Madeley, Shropshire and she married under the same name in Madeley, 1913

The est match in the 1901 census I have is a Maud Winnard, born 1896/1897 and living in Madeley but she is listed as "Adopted Daughter" of a couple in their 50s who had at least one grown up child.

I'm hoping that ordering her birth certificate may give me something, but it would tell me how the adoption came about or why and I wondered what records I may be able to search.

Thanks in advance!
