This is amazing! I have the same thing in my family. My gt, grandmother was the daughter of a servant in an aristocratic family. I always like to think it was visiting royalty whodunnit and I have royal blood in my veins.

Hmmm
I have on eof tehse stories too. My GGmother was born to a servant who was inm disgrace-twa the lord of teh manor who was the father.

Some of my cousins were most upset when I proved that actually the father was no lord but a local hawker! This matter had remained a secret for more than a century.

I found it by locating a copy of teh bastardy order at my local library. this is a historical CSA! they went after fathers in case the woman ended up on the parish. Its a good place to start. Good luck

I've no idea how it works, but if it's practical then DNA testing would be proof one way or the other wouldn't it?

We have a similar story in our family with my grandmother getting pregnant whilst in service in a "big hall". Apparently my grandmother's mother would not let her marry her employer's son as it would be "above her station".

I doubt very much whether either of our stories could be substantiated now without any written records.

OH's great great grandmother was in service with an aristocratic family, but came home pregnant. The story is that it was her employer what done the deed, so to speak, and that the family paid her off.

There is certainly a family resemblance between the aristocratic family and OH's family, that still shows today - we visited the ancestral home at the weekend.

There's nothing to prove it at our end. How would I go about investigating further?
