Trying to track down more info about my very elusive gtgt Grandmother, and "any" help you can give will be much appreciated. She has completely fascinated me!

Her year of birth is vague to start with - census/marriage certs range from 1848 - 1854.

It seems her mother's name is Mary, and I think its likely that Susan was illegitimate, as her father is not mentioned until 1887 (when I think she probably invented a father to seem more marriagable)

She was born Susan McLeod, dont know where but more than likely Edinburgh/Midlothian area.

She married John Hutton Wright in 1875, and he died in 1876.

Her son was born in 1881 (and she gave him the name Wright). I've found her on the 1881 census, and she is named as a paper mill worker - I imagine working at Kinleith paper mill.

She married Wm Peat in 1887.

She died in 1920.

I cant find her for sure on the 1871/1861 censuses, and cant find any record of her birth.

Her maiden surname is noted as Orr on her son's death certificate, but I am guessing this is a mistake.

Any ideas!?

Hi Glitter Baby
Yes, thats her - living fairly near to Kinleith paper mill, so I figure thats where she was working.
I've been wondering about the relationships within that house too - I wonder if the older lady looked after the children in return for the girls' money when they returned from the mill...
That's the earliest record I can find of her.

Why do you think her mother might be called Mary?

Was she a witness on one of the marriage certs?

Her mother is named as Mary at her marriage to Wm Peat (Mary McLeod, ms McLeod) which is why I think she was illigitimate. Her father is noted here as James McLeod, Baker, but he is not mentioned before this time, so I think she made him up!

On the marr cert to John Wright, her mother is named as Mary McLeod, no ms, and no father.

Hope that makes sense!

Any further ideas? Does anyone know how I'd go about finding employment records at the mill for instance?

Sorry - I am such a newbie!
