Does his middle name of Clifton have a significance? Could it be his father's surname?

Apart from all the other suggestions. The 1911 census should help. If he is living with his mother It will give her age and place of birth

Pity we have to wait for that

Is there an address on the birth cert?

If so then baby could have been born at gran´s house if mother was unmarried.

Check 1901 census for mother´s name or check just her surname, it may give info on her family and also her age at time of census which would then give you her birth year. Of course she could have gone anywhere to have the child but could be still on the 1901 census.

What may be of interest is to search parish records for the date in 1910 as quite often a vicar would mae a note of the fathers name in the margins! You can usually view the local parish records in your local family record centre

I always look at the 1901 census first usually the mother is about 18 - 20 ish if unmarried so i would look c 1893 plus or minus a couple of years.

If you post her name & area your father was born i'll look for you. If you haven't got ancestry

My Father was born in 1910 and would never talk about any family. Have eventually got a copy of his birth certificate and find only mother's name , no father, he must have been ashamed of this. He therefore has his mother's surname - need to find her birth certificate do I just have to take a guess as to when she may have been born ?
