The most popular software, used by many members on this sites is FTM (Family Tree Maker)

The 2006 or version 16 can be obtained for under £10. Pay a bit more and you can get a discounted subscription to Ancestry as well, which may be of interest.

Suggest you don't go for the latest 2008 version as this is completely different and still under development with a number of features not yet available.

Wow, Susan that was a quick reply and thanks I shall have a look.
I am still totally amazed at how quickly you can receive information over the internet!
Again, thanks

I have just started researching our family tree and have become totally hooked within a couple of weeks, but am now surrrounded with 'mountains' of paper!
I am very new to computers and hope someone can point me in the right direction as to a good Family Tree software programme.
I want to be able to produce more of a 'family history' being able to print out the family tree, photos, records, tetters, etc., Also to save everything to a CD to give to my nephews' & nieces' - who started this whole venture by asking 'who was who' in some of our old photos!
Any ideas please
