I wish mine had done that. I inherited a box full of photo's with no details and so far have not been able to find any one that knows who most of the people are.
I like FTM 16 or earlier, because you can use the notes section as a record of any documents you have on each person and where to find them in your filing system. Makes it very easy to see what you have when a persons page is opened.

Hi John

I to inherited a box full of goodies. Photo,Certificates etc. Names on the back of photos and how they were related. She was so organised. Which has enabled me to go back quite a way adding branches and twigs as I go.

With Lagacy you can have as many trees as you want and you can merge trees. Some of it to me seems a little complicated but there again I am not the brightest button in the box.

When my mother died I inherited a briefcase full of goodies as she did most of the research before a PC was thought of. I have only ever used Family Tree Maker. I don't know any other system. It seems very simple to me... I just look at it as one big tree. If I want decendants lines etc I just click on options. I dont know how legacy works so I cant compare it with FTM

Hi Sue

Thank you for that. Some people work back on there GGGGG parents first then start adding the branches then twigs. I have been trying to enter all as they pop up.

Some people just work back on one surname.

I use Genopro (can be downloaded from www.genopro.com).

I can have as many trees as I like or do a link from one to another by clicking a linking individual.

Hi John

Lagacy Family Tree. You can have as many trees as you want. At the moment I have both sides of my parents family on one tree. So I'm working back on four surnames

I'd be interested to know how other people sort there trees.

I would fork out less than £3 (plus postage) and buy Family Tree Maker 2006 from Amazon. As Rallyreg says the 2008 should be avoided. I have my tree on FTM 2006 and when I get time update it on here and that takes just a few minutes a week. It does have advantages, you can record much more detail on FTM that will help you in the long run. Well thats my opinion and a system I have since starting.

You can only hold one tree on this site unless you join twice under two different names and of course pay two membership fees.
If you are finding it confusing then why not just work on one side and when you get as far as you can then work on the other side of your tree. The alternative would be to purchase a tree programme such as Family Tree Maker (but do not buy the 2008 version, its rubish) then you can have as many trees as you like, but the whole point of a tree is that it branches out in all directions

What system are you using to record your family tree?

Can anyone give us ideas how to best go about this. At present I have both parents ancesters in one tree and just working my way back through both families but find its getting very confusing when you have all these surnames in the one tree.

Would it be better to split the tree in to. Maternal Grandparents in one and Paternal Grandparents in another.
