If you can find the right house and it is in the land registry data base you can download plans etc for £3

http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/

Tithe Maps tend to be in archives.

Thanks all for the replies.

I do have access to Ancestry and at the moment am going through the census' but you're right, VERY time consuming but then again in this game what isn't? lol

These may seem like stupid questions but how do I access the Land Registry and tithe maps?

Thanks
Caroline

Hi Caroline,

I have researched the history of a house built circa 1820 and I found the 1836 tithe map extremely useful in tying the location of the house (which I know) to who owned and rented it (which I didn't!) This led very nicely into the 1841 census and forwards through later censuses and parish chest minutes.

Happy hunting,
Janice

If you have access to ancestry you can also search each census by road - although this is very time consuming. Does get results though!

You can search 1881 census by address, you could start there, it may give you something to go on.

Or try Historical Directories: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/

Or try the Land Registry

Hi
Not quite sure where to start looking for this. I'm trying to find information on the history of a house I used to live in. Where would I start for this? Does anyone have any ideas?
I've tried Googling the address but nothing comes up.
The only thing I have found is that it was once a thatched Lodge which was pulled down and rebuilt, I think about 1820-1930, but cannot find information after that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
