I have me glasses now and was going to have another look - lol - but as we all agree it was looking after plantations I think you will find my explanation above is what its all about :)

Google something like coal mine plantations - see if anything useful comes up to add to your notes.

should be superintendent I guess, but it is cut short

In 1861 he is a farmer.

Actually, as I was looking for him then I was seeing all those miners and so on and something rang a bell. I remember before finding a man who looked after plantations - the mines used so much timber for shoring up and so on that the mining companies planted little woodlands to use for the work. It may well be what this chap was looking after???
