Thanks Gerry,

She hasn't seen her adoption file. She was told the info about her siblings (or half siblings) by her adoptive parents.

I posted this message mainly because I thought her birth would be re-registered following adoption and would show on the indexes. I was getting fustrated that I couldn't find it!!

Hi Helen

The birth register is for just that...for Births. You will not find your friend's mother there in her adoptive name.

After an adoption has been granted in the court the adoptee is placed on the Adopted Children Register. The index to this can be viewed at some main librarys in England and Wales.

Your friend can purchase her mother's FULL adoption certificate online through GRO... however, this will not give you any more information than she already has, as it doesn't include birth family details.

Under present legislation only the adoptee is allowed apply for their adoption file... but as you say she has 5 other siblings perhaps she has already applied for her file in order to know that information.

You can trawl the birth index for possible sibling names and apply for their birth certificates and search the electoral rolls.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Gerry

Thanks for all the replies. My friend's mother was adopted in 1951. I always assumed there would be a second entry following the adoption so thanks for that Glen.

Her birth mother was murdered and although she knows her name and that she was born in Ireland (all children born in Birmingham though) it is unsure as to whether she wants to see her adoption file or not at this stage.

My friend was intrigued to know if I could find any possible siblings for her mother but it will be difficult to find out as it's a rather common surname.

I suppose this will be best left alone, until the adoptee makes the decision to try to find out more about her past.

Thanks again

My Mum was adopted in 1943 she had her adoption cert which gave details of the couple who adopted her,
She also knew her birth name so i found the entry on free bmd and ordered her birth cert, She now knows her birth parents names and has been reunited with some of her brothers and sisters

Just to clarfiy and correct what Sarah posted.

The adoption records are only available to the adoptee, in this case the mother of your friend.

Formal adoption only started in 1927 and the adoption records are subject to a closure period of 100 years.

A post adoption certificate (in the adoptive name) would have been issued after the adoption order was granted and finalised but they don't appear in the bmd index.

Hello,

A friend mentioned her mother was adopted and wondered if I could find out any info. She knows her birth name which is a bonus, and I've found her birth entry on the indexes. She was apparently adopted at the age of 6 weeks. Shouldn't she have another birth entry (re-reg) on the indexes with her adopted name or have I lost the plot?

I've so far searched for 2 years past her birth and cannot find anything.

Any help/advice would be fantastic.

Her mother apparently has 5 brothers and sisters that she doesn't even know the names of.

Many Thanks
Helen x
