Now that I have a scanner I will be scanning all my certs and copies of Parish Reg and censuses so I can share them with other people. I dont expect them to take my word for it that I have the cert/whatever and it says.....

I like to see the proof for myself as far as possible.

Huia.

Thanks everyone. I know that I want to start asking for copies, just didnt know how it would be received. But now I see that I shouldnt worry about it.

I found a huge tree that linked into mine... I was very excited and when I asked about certificates etc I was told most of it was taken off the latter day saints site.
I was pleased to take it.... it lies in my 'pending/verification tray and I have picked away at it.
I think it is quite normal and reasonable to ask about sources. If I have any info I will always say if it verified or not and give ref no's or mail a copy of the certificate. I don't think 'rights' or causing offence comes into it... its just best practice.

I have to treat it as gospel truth because im 13 and parents wont let me research if the family have done it.

I think Karen its a sort of rites of passage for family genealogists - you start off trying not to buy certs, you add on everything you are given and you forget to put in sources.

You know you have come of age when you start doubting stuff, want the facts in black and white in front of you and your tree all pruned and definitive :)

Hi Christine,

I think thats what I need to do from now on, keep other peoples work entirely seperate and add as and when I prove it myself.

I havent updated my tree on here for so long, for that fact, and that I uploaded a gedcom, and even though living relatives are not named, needed to remove some people altogether.

In the begining I never questioned any information i was given, but have become more and more questioning, and now want proof of everything!

I have had that sort of situation too - the grandson of a g aunt didnt know that she remarried and died under a different surname etc.

Karen

On this site i have someone who is the G/Son of my Nans Sister, but i know she had a different surname..The G/Son has her down with the same surname as my Nan so that has told me that he hasn't done his research and he has no Certs, she even married under the same surname.

Also my Nans husbands Dad as known as William even married as William but was registered at birth as Samuel lol

I really wont from now on! Especially as I now have to re-visit my entire tree and double check my own research aswell.

I think you have now just found out that it is always best to confirm info yourself and not to take what someone else says a gospel

After discovering that I may have been too trusting with other peoples research, (now am re-going over 10 years worth) am I within my rights to question peoples sources and ask to see certificates etc that they have as proof?
I obviously dont want to cause offense to anyone, especially long distant relatives that I would like to build relationships with for information sharing etc, but I have been burnt by assumptions, and now my tree needs looking at with a fine tooth comb, and could end up costing a fortune to prove / disprove relationships.

Am always happy to share photos / certificates in return.

Thanks
