You can save money on your Ancestry sub if you join a cashback site first.

Have a look at quidco.com .... if you are a member [it's free to join] and access ancestry Through quidco you can get 25% cashback!

Thanks Gemqueen. Good to know. may be worth me doing a free trial period to see which I prefer, especially if I can save some money - especially now I need to purchase alot more certificates, the money will come in handy.

Karen.
I have subs to The Genealogist and like the way the census is laid out and can also view the original census and save a copy. I think they've changed the search format from a previous one which I'm still getting my head round.

Think you will find Neil means e-mailing any records you find at the library to your home address.

I can't see the point of emailing to yourself, why not take a screenshot and save directly to a specific folder on your PC?

Neil

Thanks for that tip Neil - I've only been on-line at home for a few months and it hadn't occurred to me to e-mail them to my home address! Thanks again.

Ann - Or you can save them and e-mail them to yourself as I do!!

It's probably been said before, but for the benefit of those in England who want Ancestry for free without paying any subs join the local library (free). You can use their computers for your searches on Ancestry- not everything is available but all the censuses are and you can print individual census pages for a small charge.

Agree with Karen, the ability to take a copy of the census saves a lot of time later when you want to perhaps attach it to your family tree program.

None of these sites is perfect. I suggest if anyone can't find an ancestor on whatever site they have subscribed to, they come back and ask someone to have a go on a different site. We all help each other.

Evening all,
Thanks for your views.
I think I will stick with ancestry. I know what I am doing with it, and i like the fact that I can see the original census page - and take a copy of it!

Hi Karen,
I'd confirm what others have said about the errors in transcription on The Genealogist. I've found a lot more on Ancestry because I can see the original page of the census. Sometimes I've found other relatives living in the same road. But the best way is to take a free trial and see what you think - just make sure you know how to cancel at the end of the trial if you decide you don't want to continue.
Good luck
Maureen

Hi Karen,
As John said there are quite a lot a transcription errors on The Genealogist census details but I have managed to find most of my families on there by putting in first names and ages etc.
Also, I dont know if they they still do it but when I joined I received very good free gift. I got 1841 London census free and when I joined again I got the Root Magic version 3. At the moment I am on a 14 day free trial with Ancestry and have not really found anything new.

regards
Shirley

Hi Karen
I subscribe to The Genealogist their presentation of Census details is very good but there are many errors in transcription. The Birth, Marriage and Death displays are also hard to read.
Have a trial run and see.

Hi Karen

I subscribe to both at the moment, there are certain things on Genealogist that are not on Ancestry, you can have a free trial if you go to

http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/freesub/

See what you think, no credit card needed, but make sure you know what to do after the trial, or remember to cancel if you dont want it.

Try the censuses, the transcribed part is easier to read and also if you click on the occupation it gives you details of what it actually involves.

All in all though, I think Ancestry is the best, there is more on that.

Genealogist does not have the 1881 census, but you can get that anywhere for free.

What with the increase in subscription fees on ancestry, am thinking of switching to the genealogist - on the surface seems to have the same databases AND is £55.92 for a year.
Has anyone used both, or can tell me more about the genealogist, or pros and cons of each site.
