1916-1918 is a bit awkward, the electoral rolls only list those eligible to vote, so women below a certain age (30?) and children won't be listed. Strret directories usually only list the household by surname, perhaps the man of the house but no others.

For 34-36 you could try the electoral rolls but again children won't be listed but women of 21(?) should be listed.

The rolls are held by the local (to the area) reference library, they should be able to search for you if you can't go in person, they may make a small charge but far less expensive than the archives.

Can someone advise me of the best way to find out who lived at certain addressess many years ago.

I have two which I am anxious to learn about.
1. 36 Flaxfields Road, Basingstoke 1916-18 and
2. 57 Halesworth Road. Lewisham 1934-1936.

Is it possible to this sort of enquiry on-line?
