Just had a look on the birth index on Ancestry - haven't found him so far. Have you already tried that index?

There are quite a few Thomas Joblins and William Joblins born 1879/1880, though.

Thank you for coming back to me. His name is Thomas William Jobling. I've located him on the 1881 Census. He is 1 year old living with his mother, I presume Eliza Jobling aged 21 yrs, at Stockton Workhouse, in Stockton on Tees. I don't know whether he was born there. How would I find that out? Do I just apply to the local Register Office in Stockton on Tees?

What era are we talking about. ALL my great aunts & uncles, and my gran were born in the workhouse between 1904 & 1924, because medical assistance was free. They all have normal birth certificates and my great gran says she is Mrs XXX when I know they weren't married!!

I cannot see that being in a workhouse in any way affects registering a birth.

If you discover that a person who is classed as a "pauper" in a workhouse(on a Census record), how do you go about obtaining a Birth Certificate for that person?

Can anyone help me please?
