This is a great site and I think I may have located an ancesters baptism on it already!

Thank you so much Julie - and thank you to everyone who helped with this. I have a lot of relatives in this area and this has been very helpful, I now have a new place to do searches.

Thank you all.

It appears the the IGI records on familysearch are "rotated", so are not all always available, but if you go through Hugh Wallis site they are all there. Mind you, I don't think his site has been update for a couple of years, so new transcriptions won't be there.

Start from scratch

Select Country, then County, then find which town and then start checking batches.

It's this site here, Julie:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/

For instance, if you pick England, then go to Bedford at the top of the list, you get a list of towns and villages sorted alphabetically.

The first town that comes up on the Bedford page is Ampthill, and the christenings between 1809 and 1879 in that parish are given the batch number C003712.

If you then go to the Family Search site and then select the IGI there will be a box under where you select a region. Type in the batch number above and select a region and then click search - it will bring all the records up for that parish.

What is a batch
(Click here to skip this stuff and go to the country selection menu) this is in blue and click on that

Then select Country and then county

Can anyone help me here? Im trying to locate any ancestors who were born/married/buried in the Newport, Gwent area.

I notice that when searching on LDS, 'Monmouth' (ie Monmouthshire) is in England. When searching in Wales, there is no county for where the Newport and Monmouthshire areas are (Monmouthshire is now in Wales).

Im getting in a muddle and given that some of my relatives are Jones, Jenkins and Edwards's, it would be good to narrow down the search field a bit!

Does anyone know?
