You might want to think about getting a subscription to Ancestry - it's about £83 for a year now. But you get all the census records and births/marriages/deaths between 1837 and about 2006, and also there are other things like WW1 records and some parish records on there.

With the full birth/marriage/death index on there you can double-check all the things your family have told you, too.

Take a look at Heather's Tips for Newbies. It will give you a start. They are on the Trying to Find board.

Just wanted to say you have done the right thing by finding out what you can from the living :).....A great start!

Just a thought....

If it is only oral history you have been given then it would be worth your while 'pushing' for documentary proof.

It may well be that there are birth, marriage and death certificates held in the family that could save you £7 a time.....I spent alot of money trying to trace a birth that wasn't registered and an uncle had the baptism certificate for the person all the time :(

There maybe other family 'stuff' that a relative thinks isn't important but you will find invaluable while researching in the future.

Good luck
Chris

Thta is what Chris means ..................... don't pay for certificates at any time BEFORE checking whether any of your rellies ahve them!

You must check out oral history.

As an example ...... we all celebrated my grandfather's birthday on December 25th. After he died, my uncle found proof that he had actually been born two weeks later, on January 9th!!
