Do you know what year?
Would it be covered by a census?

Hi Christine

Not sure what year, I know his brother born 1877, went to see him with his wife. So I am assuming it was not on the census, and incident probably happened in WW1.

Have you searched the Times online newspaper?
Or any newspapers local to the area?
Things like that would have been reported surely!

Can you give me his name and I don't mind having a look.

Hi Christine

Wasn't sure were to take a look, so help appreciated.

His name is Thomas M(a)cdonough or it could be under Thomas M(a)cdonald.

He was cleaning a rifle and it went off, (apparently).

Can't see anything immediately.
Devon records office may be able to help.
They've usually got newspapers & stuff on microfiche.

Hello Meg,
I too have an ancestor committed to Broadmoor, I believe in the 1920's/30's. I am stumped on his death record, anyone know the registration district for Broadmoor please? Interested to know more of possible newspaper reports on the crime, are "local" papers quite helpful in searching their records does anyone know?
This is my second ancestor to have been sent to an asylum/prison, but think I'm reasonably sane - honest!! Any help welcome.

The National Archives have some case papers for those in Broadmoor and Home Office files relating to the cases. Not online though - you'd have to go or get someone to go for you. Some files are closed, but you can apply for permission for them to be opened.
