Why would you delete a post?

Just to be clear - it is only individual responses and not the whole thread that is deleted. I can see that people might delete where others have already posted on the thread and the info is the same. Perhaps it was this - am now not sure but thanks all for your help

I have deleted too when i see I have been pipped at the post ,so to speak, with the same info i have found.and sometimes a lot more has been added whilst i was doing the look up so my reply looks really out of place.

It may have been that someone nudged up the thread and then deleted - we used to be able to clear the thread of nudges by deleting but it doesnt happen now.

They may have entered info and saw someone had already given the same stuff.

The only other reason I can think of is they had no response so decided to delete.

Allison do you mean the whole thread was deleted or just a reply from someone was deleted?

Maybe I am not following what you mean, I know I have deleted a message after I put it on someone's thread because I found out it was the wrong people I had found in a census.

Hi Allison,

I always thought that only the person who posted the thread on the board could delete it!! Only other time I know it could be deleted was by Genes Reunited staff who felt it needed to be deleted because say maybe someone had put something on your thread which was not allowed.

Yes totally agree if it is someone else's thread but it was my thread to which people had researched and given a reply - and then deleted the answer!

Presumably they had their own reason but I just wanted to know if there was some etiquette or reason that I wasn't aware of as I'm very new to this site.

Thanks

I do know why some people always delete their own threads after they have got the information from them that they need.

I am not exactly sure why but they have their own reasons for doing this and it is their thread so they can delete if they wish to.

I always reply so it isn't that - perhaps, as you say it was about duplication but I've still lost some valuable info.

Possibly because there is no response from the poster? Or maybe not wanting to clog the thread with duplicated info, wrong info, any number of reasons.

Sometimes 2 or 3 people might find the same information of eg a census look-up and post details, only to see that 2 more people have also posted within seconds of each other.
Some people then delete their own duplicated information.

Other than these instances, I find it useful to see the whole picture evolve, if Im helping someone and like to refer to previous notes on that thread.

I've just gone back to re-read a thread where people had posted useful info - and someone has deleted their answers. I just wondered if there's a reason why people would do this??
