Hi,

I'm stuck at a certain point on my tree without being able to go any further back. I was wondering what else I could try. I've tried freebmd, googling, census data etc with no luck so far.

I have a full name for this guy and his wife's first name, plus an idea of his year of birth and possible location. He was born around 1835 in Farnham, Surrey. I have found several marriage records from various yearsthat could be related to him but I'm not sure which if any are correct.

Am I at the point where I need to start visting records offices?

Yes i think u will need to visit records office or have a look on familysearch.

I think you really need to try and find him and family on the censuses. If you can find him with his children it will give you more of an idea of when he married.

Post some details and let some of us have a look for you.

Ok, here are the details -

William Thomas Blamey, born around 1835 probably in Farnham, Surrey. Married to Eliza.
At least one child - Samuel William Thomas Blamey, born 1872 in Nacton, Suffolk. I have extensive details of his wife Emily Wenham and her family already. Any details on other children would be great though, I'm dubious that they only had one child.

Note there are lots of William Blameys in Cornwall around that time, but I don't think he is part of that family. Unfortunatley Eliza and William were every popular names back then.

It's possible Eliza was shortened from Elizabeth.

He doesn't seem to appear on most of the census data from when he was around for some reason.

Is this Blamey or Blarney ?

Wonder if the name was mistranscribed.

1881 above

Not sure. Dad is a coachman. But, he was born in Cornwall. Does that rule him out completely?

Mum was born in Sussex.

Now struggling a bit with him.

Where did you get the info that he was born in Farnham in Surrey? Cannot find any Surrey links at the moment.

Simon

Simon Report 11 Sep 2008 14:01

I had Samuel as a Domestic Coachman, definitely born in 1872.

It is definitley Blamey, but could have been misspelt/read as Blarney I suppose.

I don't think the 1881 record above is correct - Samuel had three children I know about, and none of the names match.

Simon

Simon Report 11 Sep 2008 14:02

I don't remember where the Farnham part came from now. When I started I didn't make notes of my sources. I'm pretty sure it was from a census somewhere though.

EDIT: Cornwall doesn't rule him out but I know that most of the Cornwall Blameys emigrated and I've never found a good match with them. Plus other trees I've seen for them don't seem to be anywhere near mine. I wish he was from that family though, much more info available!

The most obvious next step is to buy Samuel's birth cert.

Simon

Simon Report 11 Sep 2008 14:23

Sorry, stupid question - what's the easiest way to buy the cert?

EDIT: Managed to find it and figure out the GRO reference.

Thanks everyone for your help by the way.
