im trying to find a james redvers thomas on the 1901 census, i think he was born in 1901 or 1900 as he was married in 1923 and his age then was 22yrs old. His father was Joseph Thomas. I think it will be in Wales census...
any help appreciated..

Well on the birth indexes there are, amazingly (for such an unusual name) two entries:

James Redvers Thomas 1900 Jan-Feb-Mar Pontypool Gwent, Monmouthshire

James Redvers Thomas 1901 Jul-Aug-Sep Farnham Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex

As you mentioned Wales - I'll give you the details for that one:

Name: James Redvers Thomas
Year of Registration: 1900
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Pontypool
County: Gwent, Monmouthshire
Volume: 11a
Page: 163 (

Will check the 1901 census for you now that we know when he was born for sure...

Ok - but I wouldn't rule it out!

Many people are listed in census by the name the family called them everyday - not necessarily their birth name

Ok, thanks - oh, that didn't help much - I was checking a James/Joseph family in England but the father's occ was tailor so not the right one.

If you were to get the birth cert that would give an added search criteria - his mother's name.

Regards - Athena

ps - just seen Christine's post and I think that it's quite likely to be the right family - lots of children used middle names - confirmation of this would be if you got his birth cert to prove mother's name.

omg!...what a result!...usually i would just order online from gro for certs but they take ages , so i have just phoned pontypool reg office and a fantastic lady took the details of james r thomas and i asked her to check that the father was infact Joseph before i ordered , she just phoned me back and says its the correct birth cert so i ordered it...i was very cheeky and asked her if she could tell me the mothers name and she did! Its Ada so christine got it correct!...no wonder we couldnt find james in the census when they noted him down as redvern! many thanks to you both!
