Hi all,

Only my second post on these boards so bear with me!

My question is what is the next step when you have exhausted the census records? how do you get further back. My family tree is stuck at around the 1800 mark.

For example I have a William Amos c1818, Kent England. I know he Married a Lucy Shorter c1818 and that they had one child. But, How do I figure out who Williams Parents were?

Any advice appreciated.

Kind regards

Jasmyne

Taking the place of birth from the census you can search for possible baptisms in the right area.

You can order the cert online at

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

When asked if you know the GRO ref number tick yes then quote the ref from the post above when asked for GRO ref.

The cert will cost £7

The reference number posted is to order the certificate via the GRO.

You can order certificates from local (to the event) register offices but the problem specifically with marriage certificates is that each church/chapel had it's own register.

Unless you can say which church/chapel they used then the staff will not know which register to consult, there could potentially be dozens of churches within the area they could have married at, plus assorted chapels and of course the register office itself.

Unfortunately the local offices cannot search every register and they would either ask for the venue or direct you to the GRO for the certificate.

Births and deaths are easier to get via a local office than marriages, as long as you apply to the office who hold the records for the particular district with a name and approximate date/year then they should be supply a copy certificate.

Jasmyne
Where have you seen reference to William being from Kent?
It is a fairly common surname in some areas of Kent, but the postings above suggest he was from elsewhere.
