The Complete Index to UK bmds has to be searched quarter by quarter year by year .... and then repeated to find the full name of the spouse.

It is a bit of a tedious task ..... and unfortunately, you can't search by anyhting but name, and you can't put in mmn for children!

The volunteers who are transcribing the GRO records onto freebmd are working hard, and there are updates almost every dya ........ so they should be up to 1983 pretty soon!

The Partial Records 1837 to 1983 that ancestry carries are all taken from freebmd ...... so they are always a little less up to date than freebmd.

Although you might have gotten lucky, it is a bit too recent for freeBMD.

When you say you've tried Ancestry, did you go thru the "Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983" quarter by quarter, which is what you'll need to do to find it.

Ancestry says:
This collection is complete but your search result will indicate the first and last name on the relevant page (image). Once you’ve opened the image you can then scroll down and look for your ancestor yourself on the page. If you’re looking for events from around 1920 to 1983 you will need to search here.

Note that when they say the last name on a page, they mean the last physically. If a name has been added as a footnote, it won't be the last alphabetically. This flaw in their indexing will occassionally fail to find the index page for some quarters, so you might need to change the name from Sefton to Sef or See and page forward a page or two to deal with "missing" quarters.

As Graham Norton put it, when he traced his family tree "lots of tight wedding dresses!" - it happens in EVERY family despite what people like to think !!

Its more common than you would think - it was more socially acceptable to marry while 'with child', than to have a child out of wedlock (illegitimate - I hate that word!!).

Hi Jasmyne

I think the records you're looking for are too recent to be on the sites you've mentioned.

You will probably need to subscribe to something like www.findmypast.co.uk, which has Birth, Marriage and Death records going up to 2005/6.

Pay per view packages start at £6.95.

Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a bit stuck and would love some advise, still pretty new to all this. I cant find any evidence of marriage for my gt. grandparents.

Florence Letitia Powell b.8/10/1905
Leonard Arthur Sefton b. 15.10.1906 d.1967

They had one son that I am aware of William B Sefton b.1931

I have tried ancestry, freebmd, genes and nothing has come up.

I am going to nottingham archives tomorrow so would love to look up marriage details if I have a year.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Jasmyne. x
