Craft guilds in 19th century

One of my ancestors was a slipper-maker, moving from Journeyman to Master in 1901 (Manchester area). Were there any formal guilds for such crafts, and if so are any of their records searchable on-line?

Thanks

Susi

Have a look here:-

http://www.freemasons-freemasonry.com/guild.html

Scroll down till you come to the paragraph headed "Craft Guilds".

Don't think it says where any records would be though.
