Can't get my head round this. If someone's grandparents were first cousins, would that person, i,e. the grandchild be a 2nd cousin to itself? If so, would the great grandchildren, who are sisters, would they be 3rd cousins to each other?

Hope that makes sense, I have tried to work this out but not getting anywhere.

Any help appreciated,

Selena

My husband's grandparents were first cousins, so I reckon that, as they were 1st cousins as well as being husband and wife, their children were also second cousins to each other (as well as theirselves!)

This also makes my husband and his sisters, 3rd cousins to each other.

My sons are also 4th cousins to each other, as well as being 3rd cousins once removed to their dad & aunts! etc.....etc....

Thanks Porkie I had a look. I think my theory is right that the two gt grandchildren, who would be sisters, are also second cousins.

I was hoping someone else could confirm or otherwise my way of thinking.

John Smith and Mary Jones are First cousins. Their mothers are sisters.

John and Mary have an illegitimate son Tom Smith. Theory: His parents are also his first cousins once removed?

Tom Jones has a daughter Elizabeth Jones. His daughter is also his 2nd cousin.

Elizabeth has two daughters. Her daughters are her 2nd cousins once removed.

The sisters are also 3rd cousins to eachother.

Angela, your way of thinking matches, thank goodness.

Unfortunately I have an old free version of FTM and I can't get it work out the relationship.
