I have heard people mention 'strays' from census' and wondered if there was anywhere I could look at them online.

I have 2 families from the 1851 census who are not showing .. have gone through quite a large area where I am pretty sure they are village by village as well.

Thanks

Melanie

Well strays just mean people found in other areas.

Who are the ones you are searching for?

Melster Report 13 Sep 2008 23:43

I thought it might mean people who had been missed off the census at the time .. oh well.

John Gregory .. bc 1825 Wollerton, Salop
Ann Wynn .. bc 1828 Shawbury, Salop

Pretty sure they are not coming up on Ancestry search though.

Thanks

Melanie

Melanie,

As I see it there are four main reasons why you might have difficulty finding them:

1) It might be that your people really are strays i.e. in a different district or county but with careful searching you should find them on Ancestry.

2) They are there but have been wrongly transcribed because of illegibility or carelessness. Even more careful searching will be needed to find them.

3) They avoided the enumerator and were never recorded.

4) They were recorded but, as with several districts in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, the records have now been lost.

Obviously with the last two you will have to make do with other censuses and parish registers. I write from painful experience.

Thanks Peter

I think the latter of your suggestions is going to be true. I am waiting for their marriage cert from Dec 1851 which might shed a bit more light.

I have a good idea of parents for John and the other siblings have unusual names and I can't find them either.

Will keep searching villages anyway but my lot are certainly challenging to say the least !

Thanks

Melanie

This is John in 1861? So was he married in 1851? Isee the eldest boy is only 9. Is the other person you have put on your post - Ann Wynn his wife? So you are looking for them as single people?

Is Shrawbury really Shrewsbury do you think?

Hi Heather

I am pretty sure it is Shawbury which is close to Wollerton where John is born and yes I am looking for them as single people. I was thrilled when I saw they had married in Dec 1851 as they would most likely be living near to each other for the census.

I have ordered the marriage cert and am hoping that John's father is not John Gregory - Ag Lab !!

I have a good possible baptism for Ann:

Ann Wynne ..
bap .. 16.03.1828 .. Shawbury, Salop.
Parents: Richard Wynne and Sarah.

I think I have her on the 1841 census in the next village to Shawbury as a female servant:

Name: Ann Wynne
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Gender: Female
Where born: Shropshire, England

Civil Parish: St Mary
Hundred: Albrighton Division
County/Island: Shropshire
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation: View Image

Registration district: Atcham
Sub registration district: Battlefield
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Ann Wynne 12

Thanks

Melanie

Best to wait for the cert then so you can follow through accurately.
