The number of a thread is usually added to highlight the fact that the poster has duplicated a request, and is intended to reduce the annoyance and frustration generated by having looked for info which has already been found.............and probably not acknowledged

When you click on a topic on the postings list, once the thread is 'open', the number of that thread shows in the address bar towards the top of your screen.

I have seen in replies to information seekers a numbered reference to previous threads. Where can this number be found and how does it assist?
