How do you start a completely unrelated tree? I know it can be done because I've seen a tree with 2 completely unrelated families.

I dont think you can do it on GR can you? Ive never done much with the GR tree but I cant imagine its that sophisticated.

May be you saw a tree like FTM where you just open a new file for a new tree.

I would imagine they are joined somewhere.
If I wanted to do it i would select an unimportant person in my tree and link there.

You can open as many free trees on ancestry or Tribal pages as you like

Yes I think the trees must have been joined somewhere, I just hadn't found the relationship.

Possibly

A tree is set up using FTM

Some members of the family are detatched from the main tree by using the "Fix Relationship" button

The entire file is then imported to GR

This is the only way I can think that someone can have 2 unattached trees on the same GR account

Claire is right. FTM (and other programs too) will happily allow you to add unrelated trees or branches, as many as you want. You don't even need to detach the branch on FTM, just add unrelated individual and build from there.

Hi Heather, but the way I do it is to have two Family Tree Programs. I have FTM for my main family and PAF (free from the LDS site) for others. For each of the extra families, I load them onto PAF, and at the end of each session I save them as a Gedcom file, that I can come back to later. As a result, I have my main personal ancestry file on FTM and a whole load of other files saved as gedcoms that I can load onto PAF (or even onto FTM, though I choose not to do that).

Hope this helps. Get back to me if not. I am no expert, but seem to have sussed this bit of technology.

Hi,

one of my contacts has a 'split' tree and I was unable to navigate my way, out of the family where the hotmatch was, across to the main family that you get when you load the person's tree.

I was about to start a thread asking how to go about fixing this but, reading this thread I get the impression that they've built it offline, in separate pieces and imported a GEDCOM file to GR. So it's beyond repair, within the limits of the Genes software at least, short of wiping the whole thing and re-uploading it. Is that the case?

Can anybody help with this problem, please?

Should I start a separate thread?

regards,

You can have several memberships on GR.
You do not have to log out of one to access another.
Just log on to a different address.

Mark,

I suspect that if a split tree is uploaded to GR then, no, you won't be able to navigate from one section to the other, as there isn't a link. The only way I can think of is to go directly to a name.

When you think about it, progams like FTM won't let you navigate directly either. Again you have to select a name and make the jump that way.

On the question of multiple GR accounts, I would point out that it is not necessary to have multiple email addresses, as far as I can tell from GR's notes on the subject.

Thanks Gremlin.

I will start a separate thread about it, since I am expecting the answer (how to repair) might be quite technical and it could be of potential use to more than just me and the person I'm trying to help out.

cheers,
