Scottish certs are free to view, though cheaper than buying English ones.

You may be lucky and find BMD certificates transcribed for free on some certificate sharing sites.

However you will be relying on the certificate holders transcribing ability.

I agree with all as above unless you are fortunate enough to have Scots ancestry. Sottish births between 1855 and 1907 are available as are marriages 1855 to 1932 and deaths 1855 to 1957. I'm currently waiting for next year as my great Aunt was born 1908 and my great grandparents died 1958!

Also local offices, better when you specify a ref check than the GRO for two reasons.

They use common sense with variants of a name (eg George and Geo).

If an entry can't be found then they don't charge anything for searching, the GRO only give a partial refund.

It's cheaper to buy a cert and confirm something rather than guess, chasing the wrong family for hours via the census and bmd, purchasing subsequent certs based on earlier guesswork and travelling to archives, records offices, churchyards etc is more expensive than £7 for the initial certificate.

It is probably cheaper in most cases to pay the £7 for a cert from GRO online than to travel anywhere to view.

If by chance you know the church where a couple married, the marriage register entry will be identical to a marriage cert. from GRO.

Otherwise as Glen says, you have to buy certificates to find out details.

You can't see the details until you purchase the certificate.
