Can anyone help with the occupation of some of my ancestors. Their name was Weitmann (London) and they were size and colour makers in the early 1800s. I have tried all the google websites but no luck.
Many thanks

It sounds like they made the pigments which go into paint to give the colour.

Size was also used to treat cloth in the clothing industry, so they could have made size and colours to go into dyes in the cloth making industry. Did they come from the sort of area where there was a lot of mills?

this is a sizer
Sizer - Applied size to cloth in manufacture

and a colour man

Colour Man 1) Mixed textile dyes 2) House painter's assistant

Both from "Old Occupations "website

would take a guess that yours ,being in London were in the paint indusrty making for the textile trade
