It's possible they have a copy of the local ROs index. This can give different info than the GRO index does. E.g., for Preston births, it gives the mother's MS back to 1837, not just to 1912. It also gives the sub-rego district for the event. Marriage registers are organized by church at the local level, so you can see if they got married in St Wilfreds, Ribchester or St Johns, Preston. Throughout most of the 19th cent, non-conformist and catholic ministers were not "authorized persons" who could register a marr - te only authorized person were CofE, quakers or jews, so NC and RC marriages were registered by the register's office itself.

Linda, you will only see marriage certs in the church records that have been deposited with the local register office, they are sometimes available on micro fiche/film. Birth and death records are not available. But baptism/buriel records may be found as well in church records.

If the births are local you could look for the baptisms in the parish registers. (providing they got "done")

As far as I am aware you will not find this information at a library.

Does anyone know what information I would get by using my local Library to look up local BMDs on Microfiche. i.e would births show parents names, or is the only way to pay £7 for the certificates.
