Age fibs are fairly common. When my OH's GGFather got married for the second time he tried to hide the c.20 year age difference by knocking off around 10 years from his age and adding a couple to hers. Brought it down to around 6 or 7 years. Also, to try to add authenticity, they both added fractions, so that one was x and a half years the other was x and three quarter years!!!!

Eunice is an unusual name - I think if all other factors match including fathers name and occupation, you should be happy.

people moved around a lot as they rented houses/rooms so its not uncommon for a home address to alter even from year to year.
Sometime s the move was cos they were upgrading their accommodation or sometimes they owed rent and did a moonlight!!

I reckon that is a pretty safe bet, given the name combinations it is unlikely there would be another match. Yours is the only likely marriage that comes up on Free BMD.

Again with the age fib, yes, this was common as it was not the done thing for the bride to say she was older than the groom. We have really serious problems with my wife's great grandparents who seemingly tried to hide the fact she older than him, and over the years her age varies up and down by up to 5 years....!

However, we should not just assume because something doesn't fit, there must be a mistake, so you were absolutely right to raise this.

As I said earlier, it is a matter of looking at all the evidence trying to find independent corroboration, and then weighing up the likely probabilities.

Peter - thanks for your reply. The names are William John Neale to Eunice Mary Turner on 30th Oct 1916 in St Christophers Church, Sneinton, Nottingham. Everything matches except the brides age by 3 years, but as she was older than the groom, on the certificate, perhaps she told a little fib and knocked 3 years off her age. My Gt.GT.Aunt was definitely living in Nottingham in the 1901 census,as a spinster, born in Whittlesey Cambs in 1871

I have just seen you post re the brides address. It was very common for the bride to quote a friend's address, especially is she was already living with her intended, so nothing unusual at all about that.

There is no single answer as it depends on so many other factors.

As with all genealogical research the trick is to try an corroborate each piece of the jigsaw independently with other evidence. Also much will depend on how common the names are. What names are we talking about and when was the marriage and which location?

Thanks for the ideas John. The marriage was Oct 30th 1916, and it is the bride's address which is making me doubt. The address is different to that of the 1901 census, but the same area of Nottingham.
The witnesses are obviously the grooms sister, and a person I would have thought was the grooms friend. I say this because to all intents and purposes the bride had not family in this area.

What year was the marriage? Sometimes the full address at the time of marriage is mentioned. Census checks can help. Also the witnesses can be a clue.

Thanks David - but I don't want to be pernickety. What if they (father's name and occupation) match, but I am still not 100% positive.

I have recieved a marriage certificate today, for someone who I hope is my Gt.Gt. Aunt. How can I tell 100%, that the certificate is for the correct person, and not someone of the same name.
