It usually means an owner of land, but don't get too excited cos it could mean just enough to keep a few chickens on.

ah so in this case, it probably means that he farmed the land but didnt own it, he just rented it from a large landowner (I mean the land was large, not the man!).

John - I did have a look at wiki, thats why i posted as it seemed to have so many different meanings.

From 'The Family Historian's Pocket Dictionary'

Yeoman

This term was applied to substantial tenant farmers between the 16th and 19th centuries, although it had earlier been applied to the retainers of a knight, or to minor royal household servants- hence the 'yeomen of the guard'

Can anyone tell me what the term Yeoman means on the occupation column of the census?

In 1841, my possibly ancestor was a yeoman, as were many others on the same page - the rest of his family are given as Miller.

Would a yeoman be a landowner, or a servant who worked on it?
