Teresa, make an external backup every so often. Daily if you are very busy on it. Go to File, Export, Entire Tree and choose where you want to back it up. If you have a CD/DVD drive, put in your clean CD/DVD and choose that drive. It will do it without any intervention from you, I think. If you are given a choice of the format of the file, choose gedcom. That mean that the data you have saved can be reintroduced to most family tree programs, included FTM, PAF, Rootsmagic, Ancestry, etc.

I am no expert, but have fiddled around and found a method that works. Get back to me if any problems.

I think it goes into the Ancestry World Tree in the Family Tree section. It may take a while for it to be included.
It may also end up being included on CD roms that are produced by Genealogy.com
Once you have submitted your tree I don't think there is any way of deleting or amending it.

It shouldn't be on ancestry unless you have submitted it to the World Tree project.

Can you find it on your own computer?

There is no "save as" option on Family Tree Maker, at least not on the 2006 or 2008 versions.
When you close your file Family Tree Maker will save two versions of the file - one version is the one you are using, the other is a back up. The file that you use will have an extension of FTW, the backup file will have an extention of FBK. So if your file is named Teresatree, you will have two files on your computer - Teresatree.ftw and Teresatree.fbk

The easiest way to see where they have been saved on your computer is to do a search on your computer for any files with a ftw or fbk extension. (Click on Start and select search)

Teresa, it will ask you where you wish to save your tree to if you go save as.
The default is to the FTW folder.
The world tree is on Ancestry, I do not submit mine to that. Beware of hints if you do, there are a lot of mistakes on the world tree.
