Gt. Gt. Grandfather William Smith, died 1914, on all census records, he is aged 20, 30, 40, 50, on 1901 he is down as 61. Place of birth changes from AULT HUCKNALL Nottinghamshire, PLESLEY HILL Nottinghamshire, MANSFIELD Nottinghamshire. Any ideas where his birth was registered, have tried in vain to find him, know from his marriage cert that his father was named Benjamin, other than that stumped. Have tracked his death cert with help from this site, so hoping for a breakthrough with birth.
Also if I have a good idea which church he was buried at who would I contact to confirm records of this? Thanks folks - Gerald

if he was 61 in 1901 then he was born c 1830 which is too early for birth registration.
have you tried the FamilySearch site to see if his baptism is listed

Shirley, if he was 61 in 1901, I make his birth 1841 :-))

Birth registration didn't become compulsory until 1875............

Have you tried to find a baptism on the IGI?

Thanks everyone, fathers occ. on marriage cert down as labourer, which I guess could have made him a farm worker. Will take a look at the Ruddington family, any more input welcome - Gerald

The Benjamin on the census posted was a framework knitter, so unlikely to be the one.

Are there any clues in the witnesses to the marriage i.e. brothers/sisters of William?

Have you plotted all of these places he says he was born in? Are they very far apart or fairly close together?

Ault Hucknall and Pleasley were both townships in the Derbyshire part of Mansfield Reg D, and were later (1937) transfered to Chesterfield.
