Hi, just an update for anyone who is interested,

I phoned the GRO and explained the situation, the lady was very helpful, and I got the certificate (and it is my half brother as expected).

Thanks for the replies.

My yougest sister lives in Canada ,born in 1949. she & her OH were buying a new build but having sold their house before it was ready they put all their goods etc in storage, Came a time when they needed certs BUT these were in the storage which they didnt have access to on a partial basis. She asked me to get all their certs. ie her birth OK I knew the info, her OH . their marriage and the birth of their daughter in the 1970,s I needed ALL the info in order to get them as the 50 year ruling kicked in.

thanks for the replies, I will try phoning the GRO and if no luck I'll try the local RO for the event.

Thanks

Definately get it from the local register office. My mum got a copy of mine last year for me, they didn't even ask her who she was!!

Hi Barry

For a birth registered in the last 50 years you need to know all these details:

Surname at birth *
Forename(s) *
Date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)*
Place of birth *
Father's surname *
Father's forename(s) *
Mother's maiden surname *
Mother's surname at time of the birth
Mother's forename(s) *

And it wont accept your order without them, nor will they send you the cert if all the details don't match. I believe it's to help prevent identity fraud.

You could as suggested try the local RO or the parish records to see if he was christened.

Hi Barry,
I had the same problem on GRO regarding a death from the 1970's so I ordered it from the register office local to the event in my case Dudley. I have also ordered birth certs from them both online and over the phone, the advantage of using the phone is that you can state other details such as who the parents should be etc and that way if they can't find it they don't charge. The GRO ref is of no use to them but I was asked for the quarter the event was registered just to help them narrow down the search. I hope this is of some help.

Go to ancestry and look at the Complete Index to UK bmds ... or ask someone to look it up for you.

This is the ONLY place to see bmds for England and Wales between about 1925/30 and 1983, until all records have been transcribed onto freebmd.

It is an index that has to be searched quarter by qyarter, year by year, so it can be very time consuming!

HOWEVER, the only way you can see the details on a birth certificate is by having the certificate!!

What you will get from the Index is the GRO reference number, ie the column and page number of the record.

Then go to www.gro.gov.uk, and try to get the certificate through them.

Hi all,

Can someone give me some advice on ordering a birth certificate please?

I’ve just tried to order a birth certificate online (from the ONS) for someone that I think maybe my half brother, but because his birth was in 1963 (under 50 years ago) I can only do it if I know all the details on the certificate, is there any way I can find these out?

Thanks in advance,

Barry
