I have just got a death certificate and the cause of death is

Acute Mania
p.m. certified

the place is Lunatic Asylum, Thorpe, Norfolk in 1853 and she was 50 years old.

p.m., I assume means that there was a post motem but not sure what acute mania is.
please could someone tell me if this was what we would now call manic depression.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Lyndi, thank you, I will look at that one.

I don't understand how it would have killed her....

Just found this Linda -

'In the era before modern treatments, such extreme mania resulted in severe dehydration, malnourishment, or even death.'

Thank you all very much for your help.

Poor lady, it must have been awful for her and her family.
