I have just re-read the 1841 census for my Ostlers'

Alfred Ostler 5
Charles Ostler 15
Edward Ostler 8
Frances Ostler 30
Letitia Ostler 14
Thomas Ostler 30
Thomas Ostler 13
William Ostler 9 Mo

The parents only aged 30 have children aged 15 and under. They are stated as their children on later references, just would like another opinion.

Thanks

Sue

Hi Sue

Don't forget ages were rounded up/down for the 1841 census :-) Do the ages vary in later census'?

Have you forgotten about the rounding of ages on 1841 census?

ChristineinPortugal Report 21 Sep 2008 21:29

Ages were rounded down in 1841 for adults so Thomas and Frances could have been almost 35.

Are their ages still the same in 1851, edit here they are and much older

Aaah

Frances and Thomas were both born c.1805 from later records.

Now I have learnt tonight that the 1841 census doesn't reflect true(ish) ages. I never knew that.

Thank you all

Where were Charles and Letitia in 1851? Had they died?

Sue Report 21 Sep 2008 21:39

Charles married his first wife in 1845.

In 1851 Glitter found that Letitia had also married.

Sue ages of all adults (ie over the age of about 15) were rounded down to the nearest 5 on most records on the 1841 census (not all)

This is why you might see children in a family all 15!

No, they aren't triplets, just between the ages of 15 and 19!

as a result, when looking for your ancestors on later censuses, it is wisest to ask for the age +/ 10 years, not just the usual +/- 5 years.
