Have searched the whole area village by village and no matches but have just relooked at the following. The age is wrong and the birth place is wrong but John Gregory is Lodging with Elizabeth Ash.

Could be him - it depends who filled in the census form. Apparently sometimes if the children of the house could write (I know that my great-great grandma could because in 1869 aged 26 she wrote her name in a prayer book, yet her mother - who married in 1841 - could only put a cross on her marriage certificate) they would be given the job of filling in the form.

Maybe something like that happened with him - maybe the householder or whoever filled the form in just gave it their best guess and didn't actually verify the details?

Have just found what looks like the John Gregory above in the 1861 census so that makes it unlikely.
