His records might be on Ancestry, depending on his surname.

Hi all - thanks for your imput.

I explored the aspect of DCM being a medal some years ago, and a very kind military historian who has the complete list of recipients of this medal (up to the dates applicable to grandad) couldnt find him anywhere, sadly.

I have spoken to the Records Dept. of the Army and the only suggestion they had was "District Court Martial" - lol - which might not be far from the truth actually now that I'm finding out a bit about the chap.

As I now have his army number from the Boer War I'll l attempt to get his service/pension records if I can. Not too sure if this will involve a trip to Kew or whether I will have to employ someone to do it for me as I havent a clue where to start.

Anyway, many many thanks for your efforts - much appreciated.

Just another thought, clutching at straws now,

I wondered if Dept could mean "Depot Royal Horse Artillery" which Woolwich was.And could DCM also be mistranscibed and should be" BSM" which isa rank in the Artillery "Battery Sergeant Major"

Food for thought methinks

Having googled - the most likely I can see is Department of Civilian Markmanship

Jac
I spent sometime serving in the Royal Artillery, i have racked my brain to see if DCM could have possibly meant anything other than the medal as previously stated, but i cant, i believe it does mean the medal.

I am assuming you have looked at the medal rolls, either at the Nat. Archives or Ancestry and of course his service records

I thought that as well Colin, however having had the complete lists of this decoration scoured for a sign of Grandad, there is zilch! so I'm now guessing that it's a shortened form of some sort of army department.

Hi Pam - yes I do believe it's the Royal Horse Artillery, but it was the specific department I wondered at - the DCM Dept. Sorry if I wasnt too clear.

I hoped maybe someone with forces experience might recognise the initials. ))

Thanks anyway.

I wonder if anyone might be able to help me with the following:

Grandad in 1915 states on a birth cert. that he is

Batt.Srgt. D.C.M. Dept. RHA Woolwich.

Has anyone any idea which department this might denote?

Thanks!
