Hi, I am trying to trace my gt.grandfateher, he was born in M.How central India in 1861, His name was William Walter Kearney,his father was in the british army there, please can anybody tell me where to go from here. thanks Elaine

www.fibis.org is a really useful site. You can search by surname and there are quite a few Kearneys on there.

Hi Sheila, I dont have his regiment, or his father's name, I have tried the site Maria sugested before with no luck, as nearly everyone was named Kearney.

You could ask someone on here with a subscription to findmypast to check the Regimental index of births to see if he is on that. If so, then you can get the cert and his fathers name and regiment should be given. If not, then the birth record will probably be at the India Office in London.

Hi Elaine,

The 1901 census shows him as married to Frances from Burton-on-Trent, children born Liverpool, and occupation police constable.

Would his marriage certificate or police records be helpful?
