This site is always worth a look.

A trade directory is basically a list of businesses in a certain area.

There are also Post Office directories which are usually residents but also business

Are there they things Pasty Kensit used in wdytya.
She was looking at London Metropolitan archives.

You could look in trade directories (library) for auction houses near to where he lived.
It's a start - and you may at least get an idea of what he would have done.

On a Bethnal Green 1901 census for My Great Great-Grandfather and His parents and Siblings.
Hid dad is a auctioneer assistant.
Would there be any records for his time as A auctioneer assistant at a unknown Place of work.
But he lived in 6 Low Square Bethanl Green London.
