I've got an ancestor Mary Chicken b 1840 Q1. From information I've been given verbally I think she became Mary Ritchey before the 1861 census. I can find a marriage of Mary Chicken in 1859 but John Ritchey isn't on the same page in freebmd. However, a Thomas Wiseman is. Then in 1861 a Mary Wiseman and John Ritchey are on the same page of the free bmd.
I can't find the death of Thomas Wiseman. Any suggestions as to how I can proceed please?

Which county were these marriages?

There are lots of Thomas Wiseman deaths between 1851 and 1861.

Found the marriage in Sunderland.

There are these three possibilities:-

Thank you very much and sorry to have wasted time for people. I can't understand why I couldn't find them first time round but I've got it sorted now. Marriage to Thomas Pickering Wiseman in Q4 1859, followed by his death in Q2 1860 in Sunderland. Then she married John Ritchey in Q1 1861 in Sunderland .

One can buy certificates either from the GRO or the local RO in the district where the event occured.
For most marriages in Durham, the local indices are online, and you can usually find out who the spouse is without a coin-flip.

Surname Forename(s) Year of Marriage
CHICKEN Mary 1859
WISEMAN Thomas P 1859

If I search 1861-1870 for Mary Chicken, there's an 1861 hit and an 1863. Selecting the 1861 gives:

Surname Forename(s) Year of Marriage
WISEMAN Mary 1861
RITCHEY John 1861

Note there's no mention here of Chicken, but the index and the certificate must have both names, even if Sunderland have elected to present only Wiseman to us.
