My parents were married in a Catholic church in Aug 1947 and the GRO Registration can be found in the appropriate quarter Jul-Sep 1947.

No you were legally married in the Vestry at the same time as the church ceremony occurred . In a Church of England you are married by the priest then go to the Vestry to sign the register,The same happened in a Catholic marriage except before you signed the registers the registrar did the legal marriage . was just do you take etc and you said yes and then you were then declared legally married and then signed the registers . The congregation waiting in the Church wouldn't be aware that little legal declaration ceremony took place

so would that mean that it is possible the date of regisration will not be the same as the date of the ceremony they were married in 1949 I am still working my way round this as I am hoping to find details of my grandparents on the marriage cert as I know they were born in Ireland but have no other info

I married in the Catholic Church in 1957 and my marriage is shown on the GRO records. In those days the Registrar came to the Church and you had a small civil marriage in the Vestry after the Church ceremony had taken place.you then signed the Register which the Registrar had bought to the church, This was because at that time Catholic Churches weren,t legal places for marriage.
We had to post our Banns at the Town Hall and arrange for the Registrar to attend the church

Sheila...The Church Reg.will also have names of witnesses and should have a note where the couple were Baptised and Confirmed...worthwhile looking at them or getting a copy of the marriage entry.

Catholic Marriages are registered with the GRO so you should have no problem in getting a copy of your parents' Marriage Certificate.
