hi
found this quote for your info.

"The Military Medal is gazetted when awarded but no citation is given."
135,000 people awarded the Military Medal from 1914-1993

i understand that only record would be the unit's adjutants diary which would be kept by the unit if it still survives.

i see linda has helped with the gazette.

sorry no more info but hope it helps

Sez0720 Report 16 Dec 2008 01:21

To Portland Rose and Linda G - A BIG THANK YOU!!! Sorry I haven't been able to get back to you earlier.
I have trailed through over 100,000 London Gazette entries, but still can't find out WHY he was awarded the MM. I have tried the KOYLI up in Yorkshire, but they have nothing. It appears when the Luftwaffe were doing their damage in London, they managed to destroy many records (and I thought the Germans were meticulous in their records!) Anyway, thank you again for your help. If by some miracle I find out why, I will be sure to let you both know.
Take care

Does anyone have access to any citations entered to the London Gazette in February 1917? My Grandfather Bernard Patrick McDermott (Cpl) in Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 2nd Bn was awarded the MM - he was also MiD (mentioned in despatches). I know that due to heavy losses in 2nd Bn some were transferred to the 95th? Unfortunately, he would only say that he made tea for the troops or catching a runaway horse, so my mother, uncle and my late grandmother have never found out why. We do know that he was caught up when there was a mustard gas attack. I have tried the Regimental History in Yorkshire, but no joy. If anyone can find out ANYTHING, it would be fantastic as it is coming up the 50th anniversary of his death and would like to be able to present something positive to my mum and uncle. Thanks - Sarah
