Hello everyone, I have come back to the site today after a very long break. Thank you all for your interest. Andy the baptism you mention, is indeed my ancestor. William John James Bateman on 7 Sep 1814. Thank you for sending the image of James.

There is a baptism for William John James Bateman on 7 Sep 1814 born 15 feb 1813 son of John and Beatrix Bateman at St John Horseleydowns, Bermondsey but they don't have the image for that on the other site.

They have the image on Ancestry. It shows James as "natural son of James Urquhart and Maria Bateman of 112 Kingsland Road. Father a coach joiner and mother a servant. Born Nov 21 1812

Just a quick note.

At the LMA they no longer have the register films available to view, you have to use the computer terminals to view the records via Ancestry but you can get a printout.

If you need to see a film, perhaps because the parish is missing from Ancestry, then you have to order up the film like you have to do with original documents.

I don't know when it all changed but the main room seems so empty now, it just doesn't have the same 'buzz'.

Seems Hackney Archives hold parish records

http://www.hackney.gov.uk/c-archives-comprehensive-page1.htm#

The London Metropolitan Archives also hold lots of records

I have visited them on several occasions and found workhouse records etc for various London parishes

I also have a problem with getting East London family history records prints. I joined the "Eolfhs" in the hope I might be able to get prints of Aldgate, Shoreditch etc records to add to my family history files (I like to have paper records I can re-read and take further back, not something floating in the "ether" that I have difficulty retrieving (I'm showing my age here) but although the people at Eolfhs are as helpfull as can be and are very willing --they do not actually print and post records. Instead of the only option of family history records being either go in person--not possible due to disability--or have the frustration of being told--"all of our records are online now-just search so and so"--if for a "technophobe" like me--is no help at all. Janet.

Thanks all,

Unfortunately he married in 1834 and the record only states the bridge and groom and the witneses, one of which was the brides father.

I have found a FHC in Orpington which will be easier for me to get to than the Hyde Park one.

Thanks for the tip.

If it's from the IGI that you found it, and the LDS church have an original film, you can order it and view it at your local Family History Centre (Latter Day Saints). This costs you only about £2.50 to order it and nothing to view it though there might be a wait depending on whether someone else has the film out. For where your local history centre is go onto the Familysearch web site which will tell you.

I think 1813 was the first year when pre-printed Baptismal Registers were used, and the unextracted columns were "Abode", "Quality, Trade or Profession" and "By Whom Ceremony was Performed". There was no column for dob, but this was often written in the margin. Occassionally, rather than "James, Son of" one will see "James,3rd Son of", etc. Abode was usually just the name of the parish or chapelry, but can be quite specific, so if it said "Crondall Rd, Hoxton" I'ld only be mildly surprised - it varied very much from parish to parish.

I think there's an East London FHS - and I think they might be on line. Sorry - going on memory here of something I found a few years ago but it might be worth a quick google.

Does anyone know of a site where members have copies of the above parish records. I have a baptism from the IGI that I am interested in and wondered if a copy of the record would show any more info.

JAMES BATEMAN OR URQUHART
Birth: 21 NOV 1812

Christening: 08 JAN 1813 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England

Father: JAMES URQUHART
Mother: MARIA BATEMAN

The other problem is that on his marriage reference he is given as James William John Bateman but the middle names are missing from the baptism so I am wondering if it is the same person.

Thanks for any help,

Selena
