Does anyone have any information about Newington Workhouse, Walworth Road, South East London? My grandmother, May Russell was born there in 1901 - by her birth certificate I have established she was illegitimate so I am trying to work out whether or not my Great Grandmother Ethel Russell (1875-1938) was actually living in the Workhouse anyway at the time or was just admitted there to have the baby (my grandmother) as she was unmarried.. does anyone know anything about workhouses and illegitimate babies / unmarried mothers at this period? All help gratefully received, thank you ...

Have a google for it!! Google search for anything and everything.

If you enter Newington Workhouse you come up with pages of info. Even Charlie Chaplin was there for a while.

This looks as if it could be Ethel in 1901 as it's the correct area but she wasn't in the workhouse then.
